Kerala police have taken a woman and her child into custody for using fake currency notes to purchase lottery tickets in the Kottayam Market.

Kottayam West Police detained Ambalappuzha residents Vilasini and Sheeba on Thursday.

Vilasini was arrested after a lottery shop owner became suspicious about the notes she used to buy lottery tickets. She informed police.

The police took her into custody after they found 14 counterfeit notes in Rs 100 denomination. Police also found out that her daughter was also involved.

Soon, police raided their Kurichi rented home and found 31 fake rupees, seven fake rupees 200 and a few other denominations.

Sheeba was taken into custody by police. They also seized a printer, a scanner and a laptop that were used for making the fake notes.

Police believe Sheeba printed fake notes after she learned it online and that she sent her mom to purchase provisions from small-scale traders.
